PhD Program | Funding

One of the biggest challenges for many doctoral students is finding funding for their project. Our counselling aims to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the available funding options.

If you would like to start a PhD project without having already  secured funding, there are various options available to you:

  • The DOC grant of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is relevant for individual projects.
  • The DOC team scholarship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is relevant for interdisciplinary projects of 3-4 PhD candidates.
  • The International Research Center for Cultural Studies at the University of Arts Linz in Vienna publishes an annual call for the ifk Junior Fellowship for doctoral candidates with Austrian citizenship or non-Austrian doctoral candidates who are supervised at Austrian universities.
  • You can check whether you are entitled to receive a study grant after self-support
  • PhD candidates and post-docs at the University of Arts Linz can apply for start-up funding from the University of Arts Linz in preparation for funding applications. Further information can be found here: Start-up funding fpr PhD candidates and post-docs.
  • If you are already in the final phase of your dissertation, you can apply for a dissertation grant for the final phase.
  • If you are coming from abroad and want to take up on a PhD programme, it is worth researching the Agency for Education and Internationalization (OeAD) and scholarships.at. Also relevant could be foreign/mobility scholarships awarded by your current country of residence or home country.

The Erasmus+ programme offers various opportunities for research and work stays abroad, such as Erasmus+ International Mobility, Erasmus+ Internships, Erasmus+ Short Term PhD Mobility. The International Office will provide you with expert advice and support in all questions and processes relating to Erasmus+.

If none of the above-mentioned funding programmes are suitable for you, it may be worthwhile carrying out more comprehensive research:

Austria-wide: The Austrian database for scholarships and research funding grants.at provides an overview for all scientific fields.

Europe-wide: The pages euraxess.at and european-funding-guide.eu help you to search fpr funding opportunities and jobs throughout Europe.

Worldwide: On the homepages of the Agency for Education and Internationalization (OeAD) and scholarships.at/ you can research funding opportunities abroad worldwide.

Information for artists about federal and state funding as well as other funding programmes can be found here. We also recommend newsbase.at/, an initiative of fiftitu%, the networking center for women* in art and culture in Upper Austria.
