Painting & Graphic Art

Painting is an artistic staple. Take all painting and remove it from this world: we would be left with nothingness of the soul and every selfie would feel like a desolate anaesthetic. Anyone who can penetrate the treasure trove of painting and its history will henceforth use this knowledge to experience a portrait as a manifesto of a personality, as an attempt at self-knowledge, as an expression of desire or as an intoxicating movement of color.

A research journey begins when you join the course: we meet each other in the studios, workshops and workrooms, in the corridors, in the café and on the terrace. Students and teachers have the same objects of research: the painted picture, the drawn work, the printed sheet, the embroidered fabric, the disassembled photograph, the staged performance. This research journey has many thematic ramifications and links: Landscape, still life, interior, portrait of humans and animals, micro and macro worlds, abstraction and the body as an immediate site of discourse.

The interlinking with other areas of art and cultural studies at the institute enables an exciting interpenetration of media and promotes the understanding of painting and graphic art in a wide variety of forms.
