We are delighted to welcome Katrina Daschner as a guest professor at Time-based Media for the 2024/2025 academic year!
Annual topic
Hybrid beings and worlds
Based on the artist Hannah Höch and other protagonists of the Dada movement, Futurism and Surrealism – all of which were avant-garde movements between revolt and utopia – this year we are dealing with montage, assemblage and collage in various media.
Cutting up, re-assembling and re-composing, the hybrid , the surreal, the poetic and distortion have become increasingly visible in art history in times of political upheaval. De-stability seems to find expression in these forms of artistic practices and at the same time make new systems, concepts of human bodies and other beings visible and tangible.
Katrina Daschner grew up in Hamburg. She has lived in Vienna as an artist and filmmaker since the mid-90s, where she also founded several performance salons such as the queer CLUB BURLESQUE BRUTAL (2009-2014) at the brut Theater or Salon Lady Chutney.
In her works – which are shown internationally in exhibitions and at film festivals – she deals, among other things, with (gender-specific) power structures and the representation of queer sexuality, as well as the transfer of stage language into the exhibition and film context. 2005 – 2010 she taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2010 she received the Otto Mauer Prize. In 2017 she was awarded the “Diagonale Prize for Innovative Cinema”. In 2018 she received the “Outstanding Artist Award for Experimental Film” from the BKA.
Her most recent exhibitions in Austria were her solo exhibitions “BURN&GLOOM! GLOW&MOON! at the Kunsthalle Wien (2022) and “The Borrowed Eye of a Needle” at Georg Kargl Fine Arts (2024).
