New Media Art in Turkey

Gastvortrag von Dr. Serdar Pehlivan im Rahmen der Interface Cultures Invited Lecture Series.

This Lecture aimed to analyse the existence of social and political effects in New Media Arts which have begun to show itself in various platforms in Turkey, especially in the last 10 years. It also considers the development of various artistic practices in the face of new technology in Turkish Contemporary Art Scene. Sample of artwork were chosen specifically from the artists who focus on identity, social and political issues in recent years.

Assist.Prof. Dr. Serdar PEHLIVAN
was born in Ankara, Turkey in 1971. He graduated from Hacettepe University, Department of Graphic Design in 1994. He has worked as a graphic designer and photographer in his own studio for seven years in Ixir Graphic Corporation. In 2004, he went to London for research and worked as a designer at Last Digital Company. In 2006, he worked with Prof. Roger Palmer in the workshop titled “Photography: Language, Drawing, Location” at International Salzburg Summer Academy in Salzburg. He accomplished his Proficiency in Arts Degree in Hacettepe University Institute of Social Sciences in 2008.

Recent solo exhibitions were held at Atlas Art Gallery in Ankara, Premarts Art Gallery in Berlin and P60 art Gallery in Amsterdam.  He has presented his work in collective exhibitions, as well as art fairs and festivals in Turkey and several countries, including “İstanbul Design Biennal 2012” in İstanbul,  “GRID 2012” International Photography Biennale in Amsterdam, “In Common and On The Spot, 2010” International Art Workshop and Exhibition in Greece, “VII. Fusion Art” in Korea,  “Dialog” Exhibition of Contemporary Printmaking and Exlibris From Turkey” in Belgium,  “Second Door” Container Exhibition, 2010, CER Modern in Ankara, “Touch” Exhibition, 2010, Goethe Institute in Ankara. Currently, he has been working as an Assistant Professor at Hacettepe University Faculty of Fine Arts in Ankara.
