This lecture will have as a background the history of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC USP), to discuss the making of modern and contemporary art collections in the context of Brazil, and the pioneer role played by MAC USP in the reception of new artistic practices into its collections. www.mac.usp.br
Ana Magalhães
is an art historian, professor and curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (MAC USP), where she now holds the post of deputy director. She is a specialist in the art of the 20th century, having researched the collections of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), both as an MA and a PhD student, and more recently, on the international modern art collection of MAC USP, and its relation to Brazilian art.
Ana Magalhães has curated many exhibitions at MAC USP, both on modern and contemporary art, and also served as an advisor and curator to exhibitions both in Brazil and abroad. In 2016, she was a Guest Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, in Los Angeles. In addition to teaching at USP, she was a Visiting Professor at the University of Milan in 2011, at the Université de Paris 8 – Saint Denis in 2014, at the University of Vienna in 2018, and at the University of Hamburg in 2019. This year she is Curator in Residence for three months in Rome, at the Biblioteca Hertziana, and chair of the Brazil-Italy Session for the 35th World Congress of the International Committee of Art History (CIHA), in Florence.
Among her publications, Claude Monet. A canoa e a ponte [Claude Monet. The Canoe and the Bridge] (2000, resulting from her Master Thesis); the edition of the catalogue Degas. O universo de um artista [Degas. The Universe of an Artist] (2006, partially publishing her PhD Dissertation on the Degas bronzes belonging to MASP); the catalogue Classicismo, realismo, vanguarda: pintura italiana no entreguerras [Classicism, Realism, Avant-Garde: Italian Painting in Between the Wars] (2013); Possible Futures: Art, Museums and Digital Archives (2014), in collaboration with Giselle Beiguelman; Discours aux Tupiniquins (2015); Classicismo moderno. Margherita Sarfatti e a pintura italiana no MAC USP [Modern Classicism. Margherita Sarfatti and Italian modern painting at MAC USP] (2016, resulting from her Habilitation Thesis); and coming up, the catalogues Um outro acervo do MAC USP. Prêmios-aquisição da Bienal de São Paulo, 1951-1963 [Another Collection of MAC USP. Acquisition Prizes of the São Paulo Biennial, 1951-1963] (2018), and the co-editing and co-curatorship of Atelier 17. Modern Printmaking in the Americas, in collaboration with the Terra Foundation of American Art (2019).
