Interface Cultures lädt zum Votrag "The role of mechanical reproduction in music at the age of personal fabrication: cutting record - a record without (or with) prior acoustic information".

In this performance/talk, I would like to examine the role of mechanical reproduction in music at the age of personal fabrication by taking an example from our recent project "cutting record - a record without (or with) prior acoustic information".

“I have suggested to change the gramophone from a reproductive instrument to a productive one, so that on a record without prior acoustic information, the acoustic information, the acoustic phenomenon itself originates by engraving the necessary Ritchriftreihen (etched grooves).” [Moholy-Nagy, 1923]

In 1923, László Moholy-Nagy, master at the bauhaus, proposed to produce a record without prior acoustic information. At the moment, it was just an provocative idea, however, after nine decades, we succeeded to realize the idea with a help of standard vector graphics software (e.g. Adobe Illustrator) and cutting machines (e.g. laser cutter, vinyl cutter). Instead of using a stylus and a vibration from recorded sound, we generate a graphical waveform as a computational vector line, and engrave the waveform as a continuous groove on a surface of diverse materials includes paper, acrylic, and wood.

- short biography
Born in 1977. JO Kazuhiro is a practitioner with a background in acoustics and interaction design. He studied at Kyushu Institute of Design and the University of Tokyo while he has presented his work at NTT InterComunicationCenter, ARS electronica, Museum of contemporary art Tokyo, Maker Faire UK/Tokyo, YCAM, Media Art History etc.
His major projects include "The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA", "dorkbot tokyo", "Monalisa", "AEO", "Chiptune Marching Band", and "Generative Music Workshop".
After working as a software engineer at Yamato Software Laboratory, IBM Japan, a visiting researcher at Culture Lab, Newcastle University, an assistant professor at Art Media Center, Tokyo University of the Arts, he took up his position as lecturer at the graduate school of media creation at IAMAS (2012).
