The uncle from America returns to the old homeland and he is astonished. Because many things are going wrong. However, the uncle has a lot of money and he wants to change things. He invests. He builds huge complexes and names them after himself. He buys football clubs. Sometimes he endows art. He receives encouragement, applause, many people want his help. Finally, he founds a party, wants to become president.At the beginning of the 21st century there are many such uncles. They have names like Frank or Andrej, Donald or Boris. In many places, entrepreneurial populism has shaped political and urban landscapes.Time and again it is not the uncle, but the neighbour who appears as a rich uncle. Through his investments he is gifting confidence, he is welcome. Although his money is not given as a present, he also wants something in return. He designs visions, he redraws boundaries for old sites. Soon the city carries his face. And should something go awry, he moves on.In this exhibition Public space in Zagreb is issued. with a critical and humorous app roach it focusses on the shaping of the public sphere by foreign capitaL, globalised enterprises — and “rich uncles”, whose outlines are engraved into the contemporary political and urban landscape.
