Concepts of Perception, Immersion & Representation in ZEE & CLUSTER

Kurt Hentschläger hält einen Gastvortrag zum Thema "Concepts of Perception, Immersion & Representation in ZEE & CLUSTER".

ZEE proposes a state of tabula rasa and unfolds without a narrative or reproducible imagery. What is seen is, at the very least, captured through the eyes but mostly synthesized in the brain. The audience enters a space filled with extremely dense fog, so that the confines, walls and ceiling of the space remain fully obscured. Stroboscopic- and pulse light filters through the fog, in a softened and evenly dispersed manner, to create kaleidoscopic structures in constant flux. The core visual impression of ZEE is of a psychedelic architecture of pure light.
"The question of how, and what we perceive as the world around and within us-what is real, a dream or hallucination-occupies me,” states Hentschläger. “When the fabric of our minds gets tempered with, whether through intense emotions, drugs or other agents that confuse the synapses firings, such as the “strobed-fog” in ZEE, this moment of "enlightening" reveals the malleability of our consciousness. The puzzle of what originates from within us, the actual reflections of the real world around us, and how the within and the without inform one other is at the core of ZEE.”

CLUSTER is the next generation of Kurt Hentschläger’s generative 3D animation and audio work. The focus of CLUSTER is group behavior and interaction, particularly phenomena of swarming. In the weightless choreography of CLUSTER, human figures appear mostly as anonymous particles, like a pulsing, amorphous mass or a cloud of blurry matter from body parts and light. The work fluctuates visually between realistic and abstract forms. By its generative nature, it is never fully predictable. CLUSTER describes a meta-organism with a decidedly anti-individualistic character. While the characters are of human form, their behavior is not. The bulk of sounds in CLUSTER is rendered by the “events” driving the work: swarm motion and behavior as well as changes in light and color. A rhythmical grid bonds the individual parts together. Sub bass- drones frame the otherwise generatively rendered event-driven sound.
