Engaging in several case studies, the proposed dissertation project explores ecologies of knowledges in art institutions, founded in response to cultural and economic developments that took their outset in 1989. How have these spaces of discursive practice employed the sphere of art in order to institute forms of knowledge production that were perceived as absent from an expanding “Western” canon? And how have they in turn thereby contributed to the proliferation of the notion of art as knowledge production in the past two decades? What are the infrastructures that were created in their practices as a response to a perceived lack, absence or constraint in both the humanities, social sciences and public discourse after the fall of communism and a declared “end of history”?
