Meeting-ID: 875 0232 0269

Dilys Williams will introduce fashion as a mediator of understanding, connection, and distinction, drawing on the three ecologies of Felix Guattari, Gregory Bateson, and her own work.
Through introducing a systems thinking and transformation design lens to view fashion, the session will introduce the centre for sustainable fashion framework for design. This will include looking at a planetary and equity-based context of design. It will explore four agendas of fashion as nature, cultures, society and economy and where students’ work sits in tension across these agendas.
The session will conclude with a review of fashion designing, based on a descriptor for sustainability as recognising the fundamental interdependence of all phenomena and that, as individuals, species and societies, we are embedded in the cyclical processes of nature.
Sustainability is about thriving, relationally, in recognition of our distinctions and interconnections in worlds that are of nature and social, political and cultural construct.
Professor Dilys Williams is founder and Director of Centre for Sustainable Fashion, a University of the Arts London Research Centre, based at London College of Fashion, exploring fashion as sustainability in action with researchers and businesses across the world. Dilys is also chair of UAL’s Social Purpose Advisory Group, re-purposing the university in the context of our times.
