Jon MacCormack spricht zum Thema "Nature, Evolution, Process: digital art and the computational sublime".
In this talk I will present my work in digital art over the last twenty years, along with the ideas that have inspired it. I am interested in looking beyond digital simulation of nature to the underlying processes that enable natural creativity: in biology and machine. Working with generative computer algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques, I seek to present new representations of nature through the artificiality of computer code. These representations follow in the tradition of the sublime: the computational sublime suggests a realm of the vast, ungraspable spaces made possible through computational simulation.
Biography
JON McCORMACK is a media artist whose pioneering art has been exhibited worldwide, including at MOMA, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Gallery, Liverpool, the Asian Art Biennale, Taiwan, and the Adelaide Biennale of Australian Art. He has received awards from Prix Ars Electronica (Austria); Images du Futur (Canada); New Voices/New Visions (USA); Alias/Wavefront (USA), and the Nagoya Biennial (Japan). In 2005 the Australian Centre for the Moving Image presented his first retrospective exhibition.
Since the late 1980s McCormack has worked with computer code as a medium for artistic expression. Inspired by the complexity and wonder of a diminishing natural world, his work is concerned with electronic 'after natures' â•„ alternate forms of artificial life that may one day replace the biological nature lost through human progress and development. He is director of the Centre for Electronic Media Art, Monash University, Australia and is currently undertaking a residency at the Ars Electronica Future Lab in Linz.
