'Lukas Marxt and Vanja Smiljanić’s work retraces a journey through the American West, beginning at the military base in Wendover, Utah, where the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were developed. Now a private airfield with a museum chronicling that chapter of U.S. history, the site serves as a backdrop for the film’s exploration of contrasting landscapes and histories.
From Wendover, the journey moves through California’s Imperial Valley, juxtaposing the region’s agricultural abundance with the decaying Salton Sea—a briny lake laden with toxic chemicals that continues to evaporate due to climate change. In this landscape, Among the Palms the Bomb, or: Looking for reflections in the toxic field of plenty interweaves the perspectives of diverse groups cohabiting the area: conservative Americans nostalgic for the Manhattan Project, environmentalists and Indigenous communities working to restore ecological balance, and undocumented farm labourers navigating the struggle for survival.'
