In the field of tension between
* scientific theories on art, culture and pedagogy,
* own artistic and creative work and
* practical pedagogical work with children and young people
the degree course in Visual Education offers an intensive examination of a wide variety of visual and artistic manifestations against the background of their social and cultural framework conditions and their historical contexts.
Based on the desire to create, art is understood as a research-based exploration of the world that combines aesthetic sensitivity, artistic-creative practice and scientific-reflective analysis. Students are prepared for their comprehensive educational mission, which ranges from teaching specialist skills in artistic and scientific fields, to accompanying and supporting children and young people in their activities and individual development, to active participation in shaping society. Holism and emancipation are pioneering principles for an authentic development of identity towards becoming art educators who are successful in school and out-of-school settings.
Teacher training program in the Central Cluster - Linz/Salzburg
The Bachelor's degree course (8 semesters) in Art Education provides training in art, subject-specific and subject-didactic, pedagogical-scientific, educational science and practical training for secondary and higher schools. A teaching qualification for the subject of visual arts education can only be obtained by successfully completing a Bachelor's and Master's degree in the respective subject.
In addition to the teaching profession, the Bachelor's degree program in Visual Arts Education opens up further professional fields, e.g. extracurricular youth work, adult education, cultural and media work, art, cultural and museum education, freelance artistic professions, etc.
The curriculum takes into account that factual knowledge is available at almost any time today. Students acquire orientation knowledge and understand education not as a possession, but as a process and practice. During their studies, they participate in the professional community and actively contribute to the subject as a learning system. (cf. curriculum for the Bachelor's degree program in Teacher Education, Secondary Level (General Education), "Cluster Mitte" development network, 2016)
The Bachelor's degree program in Visual Education has a modular structure. Students explore the areas of subject didactics/subject science and art/design practice in the stages
orientation in the professional field in the first year,
development in the second year and
specialization in the third and fourth year.
The educational science and practical pedagogical training is offered and coordinated by the PPS Center (Center for Practical Pedagogical Studies). A total of three practical placements are planned ( two of which are in the subject BE).
CURRICULUM BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM IN EDUCATIONAL SCIENCE AND PRACTICAL PEDAGOGICAL TRAINING
The University of Art and Design Linz offers a very practical course of study in a very personal atmosphere, which is characterized by small course groups and individual support from the teaching staff.
Teaching in the disciplines, didactics and artistic practice is characterized by an intensive examination of theoretical, artistic-creative and pedagogical content, which can be deepened in numerous in-house events such as theoretical-scientific discussions, symposia, specialist conferences, further and advanced training. The well-equipped workshops and laboratories, which are freely accessible to students, provide comprehensive scope for action and experience for their own artistic work. The University of Art's KinderKreativUni offers an additional field of qualification in the area of creativity education for children and young people.
Teacher training students can attend courses from the wide range of courses offered by other departments at the University of Art (e.g. architecture, industrial design, fine arts, robotics, etc.) and set individual priorities. In addition, students can take part in courses offered by all partner organizations in the Central Cluster. Cooperation with local cultural institutions provides insights into and opportunities to participate in their work in the fields of art, culture and education. The student exchange programs offer the opportunity to study at art universities worldwide.
Students study, cook and celebrate together in the common rooms, which are freely available to them.
