  • 17 years of age or older
  • Positive completion of the school-leaving examination or a completed art degree or a corresponding university entrance qualification examination. The school-leaving certificate can be submitted later during the entrance examination if necessary.
  • Successful completion of the entrance examination

Requirements for the Master's degree program in Art Education

  • Positive completion of a Bachelor's degree in Art Education.
  • Students who have completed the degree course in Art Education in the Central Cluster (e.g. at the University of Arts Linz) do not have to take a separate entrance examination for the Master's degree course.
  • Students who have completed a Bachelor's degree in Art Education / Art and Design at another university or college must successfully complete an entrance examination for the Master's degree program at the University of Art and Design.

Application and admission

Pedagogical and artistic aptitude is tested in the three-stage admission procedure.

Artistic aptitude

The artistic entrance examinations for the degree course in Artistic Education take place twice a year, at the beginning of July and the end of August/beginning of September at the University of Arts Linz.

The current dates of the next entrance examinations and a link to the application form can be found here.

The entrance examination at the University of Art lasts one and a half days. You will bring a presentation portfolio with samples of your work and will be given a few tasks by us during the practical exam. In a short personal interview you can tell us about your interests and show us what you have dealt with so far and what motivates you to study at the University of Arts Linz.

We would be happy to conduct an individual consultation in advance.

Presentation portfolio

On the day of the entrance examination, applicants must bring a portfolio with their own works that show their engagement with creative and/or artistic processes. The presentation of the applicant's own works should show their personal development, interests, main areas of work and artistic and creative inclination. The portfolio may include, among other things

  • graphic and/or pictorial representation of ideas, feelings, interests, nature studies, object studies, spatial studies, sketchbooks, etc.
  • Collages, photos, prints, videos, performances, texts, etc.

An individual focus is possible and desirable, not all of the areas mentioned have to be covered. If available, a broad spectrum of materials and approaches is recommended.
If works cannot be physically brought to the admission test due to their size (or for other reasons), a picture of them including a short description (e.g. title, year of creation, materials, techniques, size, short explanation, etc.) is desired. The aim of the portfolio is to give the committee a good overview of the student's own artistic and creative interests, content and forms of expression. The works should be presented in such a way that they can be easily perceived by the commission. Further preparation (e.g. framing, passe-partout, lamination, etc.) is not necessary.

A portfolio consultation in advance is possible and is offered on 2 days in the summer semester or on the "open day".
Please register at anna.erber@kunstuni-linz.at or eva.unterweger@kunstuni-linz.at

Practical examination

(only for Bachelor's degree courses)
The practical examination comprises several tasks for which the applicants develop small artistic/design works. Basic equipment (paper, pens, scissors, glue, paints, sketchpad, etc.) must be brought to the admission test. Any additional working materials will be communicated in good time or provided by the department.

Interview

The applicant presents the work samples produced during the practical examination as well as work from the portfolio brought along. In a personal interview with the committee, any questions about this, as well as study-related topics and individual motivation, will be discussed.

General information

It is possible to sit the entrance examinations for all three teacher training programs offered at the University of Arts Linz: Art Education, Design: Technology.Textile and Media Design.

However, the entrance examination can only be taken at one location in the Central Cluster (e.g. University of Art and Design Linz or Mozarteum Salzburg) per academic year and per subject. Informal preliminary talks and consultations are available by appointment at the departmental office.
