RING READING Viskom with Christa AMADEA

November 19, 2024, 6 p.m. University of Arts Linz, Hauptplatz 8, 4th floor, Lecture Theatre

Perspectives on visual communication
Between art, design and critical practice

The Department of Visual Communication invites you to a lecture series.

Practice: fine art narratives in three dimensions in photography, video and performance.
Method: beyond perception and reaction in a performative visual view.
Theory: verbalized gender language in post-pop culture, versus hope, love and death as center of politics.

Christa Amadea's main form of artistic expression is photography. She also works with video, performance and film. Her approach is to tell a personal, fictional story characterised by great intensity and immediacy. In her photographic work, Amadea plays with strong light arrangements and intense colour compositions to create a heightened and dynamic point of view. She juggles with extended visual approaches, utilising a visual code associated with metaphysical reality. By distorting and fragmenting the supposedly self-evident nature of light, she constantly reshuffles cultural perceptions - comparable to strategies that are common in popular culture and pop music in particular. Breaking up gender-specific colour assignments and their conditioning power is an important part of her artistic work.

The new lecture series Viskom offers insights into current research and design practices at the Department of Visual Communication. Lecturers present their projects and creative processes that illuminate the interfaces between artistic research, design practice and critical theory. The series covers issues ranging from classical graphic design to photographic developments and generative digital applications, reflecting the development of a critical, authorial attitude in design. A particular focus is on researching the relationships between design and image and their role in current social discourses.
