Art Education resp. Didactics/Methods in (fine) art*

Art Education deals with the ‘art’ of teaching and the critical reflection of its form and content. It belongs to theories, models and different ways of mediation. Research takes also place in that area, especially the context of general education as a key discipline to become a teacher. At least since Comenius’ “Didactica Magna” (1657) educators study their instructional actions. Art methods are therefor the subject specific exploration of learning and teaching, how knowledge, skills and attitudes can be conveyed to students in a fast changing society. This results in the desire to develop an adequate methodology to enable literacy-related and individual-related teaching strategies for children and teenagers under the guiding principle of inclusive – art – education. Didactics at the University of Art and Design Linz encompasses didactic instruction in all departments of the teacher training program like studio arts, design, and multimedia. Alongside the specifics of ‘the art of teaching’, the transdisciplinary potential towards the specific didactics of other subjects is central to its scientific study.
