Urbanity and trains are essential and recurring elements of film history. Siegfried A. Fruhauf has worked intensively with "phantom rides" as part of his film work, focussing on tracking shots from trains that pass into or through cities.
The L-Train is a legendary and important underground line in New York City. In search of the promise of a city, the artist took his 16 mm camera through Linz. L-RIDE shows two consecutive frames of the resulting footage.
Each frame conveys the dynamics of the camera captured via long exposure. Subsequently, Fruhauf coloured the black and white negatives by hand. The traces of light that appear dark in the inversion are transformed by the colouring process into the multifaceted flickerings of the lights of a city.
Born 1976 in Grieskirchen, Siegfried A. Fruhauf lives and works in Vienna and Heiligenberg. He studied Experimental Visual Design at the University of Art and Design Linz, is a board member of the avant-garde film distributor sixpackfilm, has held numerous exhibitions and participated in the Festival de Cannes, Intern. Film Festival of Venice, Berlinale, Sundance Film Festival Park City, etc.
