Feminism in Practice: Revisiting Peggy Ahwesh’s The Pittsburgh Trilogy (1982-1983)

Between 1982 and 1989, Peggy Ahwesh produced a distinctive body of performance-oriented work shot on Super-8. The people in the films she made in this period were mostly friends and family members and, indeed, relationships are the medium of performance in this work. Throughout the decade filmmaking and programming often went hand in hand. In this talk I revisit The Pittsburgh Trilogy, reflecting on Ahwesh’s methods of working with performers, and thinking about her programming of these and other films.
