Guest Lecture: Marco Donnarumma

2. Mai 2023, 17.00 Uhr Tabakfabrik Linz, Tangible Music Lab und ONLINE

In this lecture, media and performance artist Marco Donnarumma will discuss his approach to conceiving and creating musical interaction in live art pieces that combine elements of performance art, sound art, dance and theater. At the core of his practice lies an artistic, aesthetic and corporeal investigation of the body as an expressive entity that can enter in particular configurations with algorithmic and robotic systems. Within this framework, sound plays a crucial role. In his work, not only sound is a means of mediation between bodies and machines, but more often it becomes an unstable agent that affects – physiologically, emotionally and physically – the bodies of performers and audiences alike.

Marco (b. 1984) is an artist, performer, stage director and scholar weaving together contemporary performance, new media art and interactive computer music since the early 2000s. His latest cycle of works, 7 Configurations, attempts to dissect the conflicts between AI and body politics. In 2019, together with bioartist Margherita Pevere and multimedia artist Andrea Familari, he co-founded the performance group Fronte Vacuo. The group is dedicated to creating radically transdisciplinary live art, where performative events blur into social experiments.

Touring consistently for the past fifteen years across major and independent theaters, concert halls, parking lots, squats, festivals and museums worldwide, Donnarumma’s work has been shown, among others, at Volkstheater Wien (AT), Münchner Kammerspiele (DE), Romaeuropa Festival (IT), Ming Contemporary Art Museum (CN), Chronus Art Center (CN), Ars Electronica (AT), Donaufestival (AT), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (DE), NRW Forum (DE), Nemo Biennale/HeK Basel (FR), LABoral (ES), musikprotokoll (AT), CTM Festival (DE), tanzhaus nrw (DE), Laznia Center for Contemporary Art (PL), and Kontejner (HR).

Donnarumma holds a Ph.D. in performing arts, computing and body theory from Goldsmiths, University of London. He is currently a Medienkunst Fellow at medienwerk.nrw and an Associate Researcher at the Intelligent Instruments Lab, Reykjavik. His writings are published by MIT Press, Oxford University Press, Routledge, ACM and Springer.
