Artistic Knowledge Practices

Professorship for Artistic Research

The Professorship for Artistic Research at the Institute of Fine Arts and Cultural Studies is a platform for experimenting with artistic and cultural science approaches. It is beyond dispute that research also takes place in the arts. People experiment with different materials and media, with forms and contents; they address and discard themes, and later address them again... The questions at the centre of the field of artistic research are: How can artistic and scientific approaches benefit from each other in the exploration of culture(s), how can they complement or motivate each other in order to break new (common or separate) ground? How is it possible to reflect on one’s own (artistic or scientific) research? How do we produce knowledge of culture(s), and for whom? To what extent can we develop new approaches and intellectual spaces? Most of all, artistic research poses the questions of social relevance, impact, forms of design, and of the communication of our knowledge production. We build on problems of methodology, history of science and sociology of knowledge, and open up a space for self-reflection and experimenting.
