is architect, environmental artist and urban curator, independent researcher. In the last ten years she focused on action research processes of inhabiting unusual places in need to be redefine involving educational programs, art productions, social activities and public events in a flux of creative-transformative doing assuming the “space” with the double meaning of physical and human environment. Graduated with honors in Architecture at IUAV University of Venice (2009). From 2010 she attended the Postgraduate European Master in Urbanism (EMU) at the KU Leuven (Belgium), TU Delft (Holland) and at Parsons The New School for Design in New York (2012). Phd in Urbanism at IUAV University of Venice (2018) with the research “Inhabiting places of Oblivion” elaborated from the direct observations gathered during the long process of re-appropriation (2012-2017) of the abandoned Teatro Marinoni inside the former Ospedale al Mare in Lido of Venice where she experimented the role of art and cultural production as drivers for transformative change inside neglected site. The thesis analyzes the binomial of relations between internal/external - human being/environment with particular attention to the environment intended as a place of abandonment and to the human being as bearer of different environmental needs, with a focus on there generative possibilities of learning from experience through the creative “doing”. During her formal studies she attended numerous seminar, workshop and masterclass in performing art to investigate the relation in between the body and the surroundings, the emotional effects of being human in the space. She had the opportunity to experience the work of Iride Sauri, Ismael Ivo (Arsenale della Danza), Virgilio Sieni, the Living Theater, Carolyn Carlson and to cross disciplines such as Contact Dance Improvisation, Feldenkrais and dance-theater. Andrea Curtoni
is an independent architect and PhD in Urbanism at the IUAV University of Venice. His research has focused on insurgent practices and the re-appropriation of urban spaces, the role of participatory practices and public art in urban regeneration processes and sustainable urban development. His research aimed to confront design and urbanism when space is conceptualized as the means by which conflicts and negotiationsare articulated at different and interrelated dimension as Insurgent Urbanism identifies an urbanization of direct action in the multiplicity of daily practices of rewriting and contending spaces. Since 2020, he is Research Fellow at IUAV University of Venice with a research on domestic spaces and public housing in Venice. Graduated with honors in Architecture at the IUAV University, Venice (2009), he attended the Europeanpost-graduate Master in Urbanism - a joint program with the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the Technische Universiteit Delft and with a full scholarships - Atlantis EU-US Cooperation Programme - the School of Design Strategies at Parsons - The New School in New York City with a research into Mexican immigrants' neighborhoods, homes, and livelihoods in the increasingly gentrified borough of Brooklyn. In 2016 he attended a Post Graduate Course at IUAV University in “Participatory Local Action and Sustainable Urban Development” with a focus in local development, methods and tools of participation processes and social innovation. Founder of Stalker urban artlaboratory (1995), Osservatorio Nomade (2002), Primaveraromana (2009), Biennale Urbana (2014), NoWorking (2016) and SUN school of nomadic urbanism (2017). Theorist of urban and environmental intervention practice aimed at understanding, social involvement and theuse of artistic practices in the development of environmental, social and urban transformation processes.Graduated in Architecture at La Sapienza University, Rome (1997), he was Prix de Rome Architecte at the French Academy, Villa Medici, Rome (2000-01), member of the board ofdirectors of IN / Arch Lazio (1995 to 1999), artistic director for the Orestiadi Foundation of the projects "Islam in Sicily, a garden between two civilizations", exhibited in Rome, Tunis, Cairo, Amman, Damascus, Abu Dabi, Karachi, Islamabad, San'a, Ryad, Doha between 2001 and 2006 and “Via Mare, vicende del Mediterraneo” exhibited in Tunis and Palermo (2003-05). He recently curated the annual exhibition of the French Academy, Villa Medici “Dans le tourbillon du tout-monde” on the theme of the pandemic and climate change.
Professur raum&designstrategien
Giulia Mazzorin, Lorenzo Romito und Andrea Curtoni nehmen als Künstler*innenkollektiv ab 1. Oktober 2022 die Professur für raum&designstrategien am Institut für Raum und Design auf. Das in Venedig ansässige Kollektiv "Biennale Urbana (BUrb)" wurde 2014 von Giulia Mazzorin, Lorenzo Romito und Andrea Curtoni gegründet und arbeitet in den Bereichen Architektur, Design und Kunst. Mit Beginn des neuen Studienjahres wird das Kollektiv nun die Professur raum&designstrategien an der Kunstuniversität Linz bekleiden. BUrb untersucht die kritische Präsenz des Biennale-Systems in den peripheren Gebieten der Stadt Venedig und die Beziehung zwischen Kunst, öffentlichem Raum und sozialem Kontext. Sie tun dies durch territoriale Erkundungen und Kartierungen und die Realisierung direkter Aktionen an den kritischen Orten der Lagunenmetropole. Neue Synergien zwischen lokalen und internationalen Dimensionen, dem Bildungsprogramm, der Kunstproduktion und der temporären Nutzung verlassener Räume bieten auch Gelegenheiten, mit neuen Lebensformen zu experimentieren.
