Austrian Art Prize 2023 for Peter Androsch

Peter Androsch received the Austrian State Prize for Music 2023.
The Austrian Art Prize is awarded annually by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (BMKÖS) to established artists and institutions for their entire oeuvre. The prize recognizes both a multifaceted artistic creation, a comprehensive oeuvre and the continuous development of content in artistic work.
Peter Androsch is one of the most productive, committed and dazzling artists in Austria. His music for the internationally successful film Hasenjagd by Andreas Gruber made him known to a wide audience as early as 1994. It deals with an extremely brutal and bloody episode from the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp and thus the history of Austria.
This immediately highlighted some of the cornerstones of Peter Androsch's artistic work: a lasting connection with his home region, reflection on - often Austrian - history, a focus on issues outside the general field of vision, artistic treatment and realization in a way that is accessible to everyone but never banal.
Androsch has received recognition through national and international prizes, but even more in the form of commissions for more than 20 operas and many other works of all genres.
As a soloist, Androsch integrates all traditions of classical and popular music with somnambulistic certainty, as if this distinction had never existed. In his choice of subject matter, Androsch always remained unobtrusively committed and always succeeded in putting his finger in open wounds or wounds that were only painstakingly covered. Nevertheless, he was not content to raise uncomfortable questions in established temples of art, but repeatedly developed participative projects with schools or lay people.
He was responsible for the music program of the European Capital of Culture Linz09, the development of the Hörstadt project, which still exists today, including the Linzer Charta for the sustainable design and development of acoustic space.
