Application Process for PhD-Candidates

Information about the PhD programme for exchange students

The University of Arts Linz offers one PhD-programme for all departments.

The thematic fields represented at the University of Arts Linz and hence also represented in the PhD-program include Cultural Science, Art Theory, Design, Interface Cultures, Industrial Design, Robotics, Architecture etc.

The PhD-programme ranges from research based on artistic practices, design research, art theoretical work, cultural studies research to more applied research.

The fact that we offer one PhD-programme for all disciplines enables a high permeablity between the different fields of study and focus as well as between scientific, artistic and scientific-artistic approaches.

The PhD curriculum does not foresee the attendance of specific courses. Instead, a supervision agreement is made.  It is a contract between the PhD candidate and a supervisor from the University of Arts Linz, who agree on the individual achievements to be completed within the next few years. This may comprise the completion of specific workshops or courses, but also artworks, the holding of lectures etc. Generally, the PhD programme has a very flexible structure, with the completion of the PhD-project at its core.

The following webpage provides an overview of the ongoing and completed PhD projects of our over 150 PhD candidates at the moment. You can also have a look at the following site with more information on the PhD-programme.

PLEASE NOTE:
Incoming PhD candidates need to select a PhD guest supervisor of the University of Arts Linz. Please contact the PhD Office in this regard. The supervisor's profile should cover the thematic range of the PhD project of the candidate. Unless you have a commitment from one of the eligible guest supervisors, you cannot start your stay in Linz! Due to the nature of the PhD curriculum the University of Arts Linz endorses currently only stays of at least one semester.

The connection to a specific department or field of study is sought through the assigned PhD guest supervisor. If offered, attendance at the doctoral colloquia by the PhD guest supervisor is desired.

PhD incoming students can acquire 15 ECTS points per semester by attending and completing the colloquia from the PhD guest supervisor.

If the PhD incoming students need further ECTS points or if they are interested in additional courses, they can attend courses according to the availability of study places, after prior agreement with the course teacher.
