Looking beyond sustainability

November 13, 2024, 5 p.m. Tabakfabrik Linz, Peter-Behrens-Platz 10, Bau 1, Stairs A, 5th Floor

The Fashion & Technology department invites you to a talk by Florian Sametinger.

Florian Sametinger has been Professor of Design Research and Design Theory at the University of Art and Design Linz since October 2023. Previously, he further developed and led a research team at the design and branding agency KISKA in Salzburg.

In his work, he has intensively explored the intersections and friction points between design research and sustainability, regenerative cultures, and participation. He critically examines the processes and methods surrounding design practice and related research, challenging conventional approaches to sustainability in design. Sametinger advocates for a "Sustainable Design by Default" approach, which he views as crucial in both practice and theory, pushing beyond mere eco-efficiency towards regenerative design principles that actively contribute to ecological and social systems.

His research incorporates critical perspectives on the role of design in addressing complex societal and environmental challenges, questioning dominant paradigms and exploring alternative, more holistic approaches. Sametinger's work seeks to move beyond sustainability towards creating net-positive impacts on ecosystems and communities.
