Inaugural lecture Univ.-Prof.in Dr. Silke Felber

March 12, 2025, 6 p.m. University of Arts Linz, Hauptplatz 6, lecture hall C & Online

Inaugural lecture by Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Silke Felber, at the Institute of Fine Arts and Cultural Studies, Department of Cultural Studies under the title:

On the (un)knowledge of the senses

What do things whisper as soon as we can't believe our eyes? How can we feel the gaps in time? And what does injustice smell like? In her inaugural lecture, Silke Felber invites us to write and read the history of knowledge not just in terms of our senses, but in terms of our senses. Using selected scenes and artefacts, she unfolds the socio-cultural, economic, colonial, environmental and spiritual dynamics that shape the production and circulation of (un)knowledge - and uses the nose in particular as an epistemological instrument.

Silke Felber has been Professor of History of Knowledge - Knowledge of the Senses at the University of Art and Design Linz since October 2024. The habilitated theater and cultural scientist previously researched and taught at the University of Vienna, the University of Oxford, Ghent University, the University of Bern, the University of Graz and the mdw. Most recently, she held a professorship in theater studies at the Free University of Berlin. At the University of the Arts, she heads the ERC Consolidator project OLFAC, which investigates the use of odors in artistic, police and military contexts and is dedicated to fundamental questions about the socio-political power of the (sense of) smell.
