Inaugural lecture by Univ.-Prof.in Arch.in Dipl.-Ing.in Heidi Pretterhofer and Univ.-Prof. Arch. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Rieper in the field of Baukultur in the Department of Architecture at the Institute of Space and Design.

At the start of the 2023/24 academic year, Heidi Pretterhofer and Michael Rieper have become Professors of Baukultur at the Department of Architecture at the University of Arts and Design Linz, funded by the Upper Austrian government. The team, which is critically and proactively involved in building and spatial culture, is committed to the high-quality development of rural and urban spaces. In their inaugural lecture entitled “Upper Austria painted on - Upper Austria painted off”, they outline how they want to work, exchange ideas and shape the future together with Upper Austria's stakeholders, those responsible in the municipalities and civil society.

Upper Austria painted on - Upper Austria painted off

Baukultur is a res publica, a task that is of importance to the public as a whole. It is about mediating between several social functional systems that do not communicate directly with each other. There are no direct bridges between space, ecology, politics, aesthetics, law, economics, science and confession of faith. The Green Deal, beauty, truth, justice and profit are not tasks that are readily compatible with one another. They require structural linkages that can be adequate or inadequate. Baukultur is not harmless; the conflicts of interest are probably greater than the similarities, because Baukultur phenomena have a visible exterior, surrounded by invisible networks of infrastructures, data, money flows, decision-making structures and desires. Upper Austria painted on begins with the open landscape, encompasses the built, but also the unbuilt, the in-between. Upper Austria painted on concerns the planning and production processes, has an impact on coexistence and negotiates the design of the future.

Heidi Pretterhofer and Michael Rieper are both architects and since 2023 they share the professorship for Baukultur at the Institute for Space and Design - die architektur, funded by Upper Austrian government. Both work in varying teams on the development, planning and realization of experiments at the interface between architecture, art and design, with a passion for installations and interactions in public space, such as Club Hybrid, a demonstrative building in Graz. Heidi Pretterhofer taught and researched at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology. She is a member of the board of trustees of the IBA'27 StadtRegion Stuttgart and of the expert committee for art in public space in Lower Austria. Michael Rieper taught housing and urban planning at the Vienna University of Technology and was one of the initiators of BELLEVUE in 2009. The yellow house at Bindermichl/Spallerhof in Linz.

* Provincial Councillor for Economic Affairs Markus Achleitner has initiated the establishment of a platform for Baukultur and will speak at this event.

Heidi Pretterhofer and Michael Rieper took up the newly created professorship of Baukultur on October 1, 2023.
