Second-hand, used, old, second-hand or preowend - an old principle with many names. Used clothing and textiles have many names and are more in demand in Germany than ever before. 'Second-hand is in', whether online, privately, at flea markets or from the big players in the fashion industry. But what exactly does the life of a textile look like beyond romantic vintage nostalgia? The empirical cultural scientist Ann-Kristin Reinkenhoff provides insights into the global trade in used textiles. She follows the paths of German used textiles from a variety of perspectives. With reports on her research visits to the largest used textiles market in West Africa in Accra (Ghana) and visits to sorting plants in the Netherlands, she provides a look behind the global scenes. Current practices, problems and opportunities in the trade will be presented and scrutinized.
After the lecture, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.
Ann-Kristin Reinkenhoff is an empirical cultural scientist (B.A.) and researches the global used textiles and second-hand trade with a focus on Ghana.
