Basics for setting up an awareness structure

AKG course WS 2024/25

Speaker: Awa* collective for awareness work

Awareness work is and has been developed by victims of discrimination and (sexualized) violence and their allies. Awareness focuses on the well-being of the person affected by discriminatory, abusive or transgressive behavior. This is accompanied by partisan support, if the person concerned so wishes, so that they are not left alone with the consequences of discrimination and (sexualized) violence. The approach is intersectional and takes into account those affected by multiple forms of discrimination. In anycase, awareness work creates solidarity in the interests of the person seeking support.

The block course consists of 4 parts. In the first part, the basics of awareness work are developed by means of text discussion and individual and group work, in order to later be able to develop the foundations for the development of an awareness concept. Various texts deal with basic concepts such as consensus, solidarity, partiality, power of definition, understanding violence and discrimination and intersectionality (being affected by multiple discrimination). In the second part, scenario training, the content learned is consolidated and reflected upon by means of group work, among other things. The third part is dedicated to setting up a contact point structure. Aspects of developing an awareness concept for various contexts, including the university sector, are discussed here. Important points with regard to the writing of such a concept and the structural and conceptual development of a strategy are discussed. We understand an awareness concept as an active concept that gives people practical options for action in the event of violence and discrimination. The concept has a complementary or constructive character.

The aim of the event is to go into more detail about setting up an awareness structure or contact point and the content and strategic development of an awareness concept. In the fourth part, the most important aspects of the concept are written down and the written elaboration with specification of individual aspects is commissioned as a final (small group) seminar paper.
